The Thalaiyar Falls are also known as the Rat Tail falls. They are located in the Palani Hills of Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu. Falls height is of 975 ft which are the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, and the third highest in the country with a worldwide rank of 267.
The falls got its name as Rat tail falls because it can be spotted as a silver line from a long distance on the way. Tourists are allowed to walk along the wall of the falls and reach the centre of the falls to enjoy them better and have clearer view of the fall.
The waterfall is considered inaccessible to the general public as there is no well-connected road to it. Though hiking to the top of Thalaiyar fall is challenging one need to be cautious while hiking, The hiking path proceed along orchards and fields around the Manjalar Reservoir which also has a small shrine dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi. Myths also hold that Goddess Kamakshi was born at the foot of the waterfall in the bamboo bush due to which the place is called Amma Machhu.
